Kotagede set to become Major Tourist Destination

TEMPO Interactive, Yogyakarta:Kotagede in Yogyakarta is set to become a main tourist destination. The old city is mostly associated with silver handicrafts, but has many ancient buildings as well as traditional food and customs that have high tourism value.
“The main tourism destinations in Yogyakarta are focused around Malioboro, the palace and surrounding areas,” Deddy Pranowo Eryono, the Yogyakarta Tourism Promotion Board chief, said yesterday.
There are many heritage buildings in Kotagede, including ancient tombs and mosques that date back to Hindu times.
Widiyastuti, from the Yogyakarta Tourism Office admitted that Kotagede has not become a main tourism destination in Yogyakarta despite its large potential. "Kotagede could become the icon of cultural tourism,” she said.
