Surakarta surveying its cultural heritage
The Surakarta administration is taking stock of the municipality’s cultural heritage.
Surakarta City Planning Agency chief Yohannes Bambang Sri Nugroho said on Wednesday that the inventory has been underway since January.
“The inventory will take five months and has a budget of Rp 100 million [US$11,400],” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Surakarta registered 70 cultural heritage items in 1997, including heritage areas, traditional houses, colonial public buildings, houses of worships, gates, monuments, street furniture, green spaces and parks.
The inventory team must describe each item, including their shape, physical condition, material and architectural style, among other things, Yohannes said.
The team will also examine buildings in the city built more than 50 years ago.
The 2010 Law on Heritage Buildings stipulates that buildings older than 50 years and have cultural and historical importance can be categorized as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
The completed inventory would be forwarded to the East Java Archaeological Heritage Center for advice on items that might be classified as culturally significant, he said.
“The Culture and Tourism Ministry will then validate their status as cultural heritage items,” Yohannes said.
Surakarta Regional Representatives Council deputy speaker Supriyanto said lawmakers would deliberate a proposed bylaw on cultural heritage after the inventory was complete.
